With large agricultural societies and eventually industrialization, the world became highly stratified. That is, we’re somewhat layered according to wealth, power, and other statuses. As foragers, we were all generally quite equal, but in an industrial society, the gap between the rich and the poor, the powerful and the powerless, is quite large.  I have mentioned in the past that my current research involves motherhood in my immediate community. At the beginning of this shelter in place order, I wrote an essay for the Society for Cultural Anthropology journal.
