OpenEMR Software Essay Sample

Introduction

The OpenEMR comprises an open-source electronic health records and medical practice management software that is designed to enhance knowledge and skills development. The software offers several features critical for useful health records and medical practices to be advanced. The software is fundamental to enhance capacity in handling health care information and the healthcare information systems. The patients’ information management is fundamental to the quality and high standard service delivery. Therefore, the software is essential in the healthcare professional impacting on competence and quality of service delivery. Thus, extensively resolve the health problems in the era of technological advancements dynamics as key components aiding medical practices.

Physician Access

The physician access portal aids medical practitioners with the capacity to track patient health information history. The portal allows the medical practitioner (physician) to enter information about a patient. For a new patient, the physician is expected to add the new information into the system allowing the health data to be recorded for future references. The patient/client module enables the physician to retrieve health information history regarding a particular patient. The “Patient Finder’ allows the search of a specific patient’s information and complemented by the ‘Patient Record Request’ tab to access the information (OpenEMR, 2020). The tool is essential to ensure that, as a physician, you do not miss anything on the patient’s health history. Thus, inform critical decision making in the diagnosis and medication of the patient every time they visit the healthcare facility.

Also, the physician assesses portal is designed in such a way that it helps the medical practitioner to keep a record of their activities, schedules, and reminders of the work in progress. The calendar module is fundament to plan and update diaries. This helps keep the records of the activities of the physician on a day-to-day basis and plan for the future (the next days). The capacity to manages the days effectively is essential to achieve high-performance ratings and efficiency in work delivery. The Flow Board module helps track the visit status and schedules in different wards to attend to different needs. The Recall Board helps plan sufficiently for patients needing a recall. This is fundamental to closely monitor and keep the patient’s progress up to date. The messages keep the physician informed and in the capacity to receive any communication. The fees, inventory, and reports are an essential part of the procedures to conduct the duties of the physician effectively successfully. This complies with the hospital requirements and protocols.

Administrator Access

The administrator access portal maintains all the activities of the physician and ensures that the system is functioning correctly. The administrators determine what modules to include depending on the importance and demand from the physicians, patients, and the healthcare facility. The administrator portal is responsible for the design of the physician’s portal and the activities – limits to what the physician can do on the platform (OpenEMR, 2020). For smooth functioning, the administrator must approve of the information and features that the physician can use. This presents that the physician can only access what the administrator has designed and incorporated into the system. The administrator acts as the overall custodian of the system and facilitates its functioning and efficacy in meeting the system’s objectives.

Key Differences

The primary difference between the administrator’s and physician’s portal entails the capacity to edit and delete modules in which the system has to aid the physicians to work. The administrators have the sole power to edit and delete information from the system and control what the physician does with the system. For instance, the administrator can add critical components to a specific module that were previously unavailable. The administrators respond to the needs of the physicians to design a system that enhances their productivity in care provision and service delivery.

The designs developed by the administrator are essential to capture all the activities of the physicians and how they can manipulate the information to generate vital feedback. This impacts on providing reliable information that can be utilized in the healthcare service provider.

Furthermore, the administration portal can only be utilized and edited by the administrator. Though available at the physician portal, the administration module cannot be modified. It limits the physician to what they can do on the portal. The administrator can execute a myriad of activities through editing key features such as Users, Addr Book, Globals, Facilities, Practice, Codes, Layouts, Lists, ACL, Files, Backup, Rules, Alerts, and Patient Reminders (OpenEMR, 2020). Moreover, the admin has access to all physician’s activities on the system while the physician can only see the activities on the portal. The same way they can access numerous information regarding the patients – is the same way that the administrator can access and review all the information of all physicians. Thus, the administrator has power over the physician in the use of the system.
