Connecting “Song of Solomon” with Current Events

Problem of writing about Song of Solomon: One of the main challenges of writing a paper about a novel like Song of Solomon is that so much has already been written about it, and half of that material is available online (and the worst material is the most readily available). Already in the group work and the quizzes, we’ve already run into some minor issues with using outside sources without attribution. I’m reluctant to call all of this plagiarism, though last semester a student pasted whole answers from another source and was penalized accordingly. So what do we do?  Essentially, we will compose a paper connecting Song of Solomon with current events. A general comparison will be too broad, of course, so we must focus on a particular aspect or theme and formulate an argument. For instance, you could write about racial discrimination, or violent reactions to racism, or even racism within the Black community. The topic is open but you have to use at least one additional outside source, but that could be something as simple as a newspaper article. Quotes from the novel are of course necessary and should be featured prominently in your paper.
