Causal Argument: How Did It Get That Way?
Based on Malcolm Gladwell’s argument in his book The Tipping Point, write a cause/analysis essay that examines, explains, and argues about a (fairly) current idea, trend, product, or social behavior that you find interesting. In other words, you will be arguing that your topic either has tipped or is about to tip. You will then unpack what, specifically, caused this tipping point. This requires you to research your topic and find credible sources about that topic.
Please pick a topic that interests you. Here are a few examples from past papers: Online dating, the Black Lives Matter movement, Hello Kitty, the iPhone,Tom’s shoes, The Jonas Brothers, the 2016 election of President Trump, Tik Tok, and Arab Spring. These are just a few examples. Think about something that has gone viral! For instance, I woke up this morning and thought that Zoom might be an interesting topic.
Please keep the following in mind:
Clearly define your trend to your audience. How it got that way will not matter if you do not first explain what it is.
Apply Gladwell’s three rules of epidemics to your trend: “The Law of the Few,” “The Stickiness Factor,” and “The Power of Context.”
Include a works cited page following MLA style. You will need to include at least 6 outside sources, but you will probably find that you need more than that to successfully argue this paper. (Remember to include Gladwell’s book as one of your sources.)
