Analysis of Either Plays “Death of a Salesman” or “Fences”

Description

OPTION 1- Death of a Salesman – Arthur Miller Critics have argued that Willy Loman, the protagonist of the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, is a modern tragic hero. Write a character analysis* of Willy Loman, evaluating what aspects of the “tragic hero” in Greek tragedy can be applied to this modern play and to Willy Loman.  Consider the following: Is Willy pathetic rather than tragic? Is this tragedy of an individual’s own making or is society at fault for corrupting and exploiting Willy? What are the reasons that motivate Willy’s actions and choices? Can the concept of anagnorisis, or recognition, be applied to this character?     *In a character analysis, you crystallize what makes the character tick. It is a kind of psychological profile in which you reveal the key to understanding the character, the reasons why they behave in a certain way, their contradictions, their mistakes, their humanity, etc.   ** Your paper should be based solely on textual evidence from the play. This is not a research paper, and you should not use the Internet or outside sources to complete this assignment. Using the Internet can lead to plagiarism. Each paragraph (except the introduction and the conclusion) must be supported by adequate citations from the play. Citations should be introduced, analyzed, and used to support your argument. Your paper must contain a clear thesis that responds to the prompt.      OPTION 2- Death of a Salesman – Arthur Miller Write a paper on the play Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, in which you argue the purpose of the truths and lies being told by the members of the Loman family, and their effect on the family dynamics. In other words, when and why do the Lomans lie and/or tell the truth to one another? Focus on the interactions between Willy and at least two family members. Is Willy the only character who lies? What types of lies are being told?  What truths transpire about this family’s condition and about the relationship between its members (family dynamics)?   * Your paper should be based solely on textual evidence from the play. After you have espoused his point of view, argue whether, in your opinion, he is just a hypocrite or/and whether there are redeeming reasons for his behavior.Support your conclusions with textual evidence from the play. (This prompt requires you to think deeply about this complex character; your conclusions should consider his actions in relation to his personal history, personality, and social-economic conditions. Go below the surface.).    * Your paper should be based solely on textual evidence from the play.
