Genre Analysis

The genre analysis can be done on any topic. Why and How This assignment builds on the threshold concept that writing appears in different forms, or genres. Each has its own conventions for what kind of content and information is expected to appear. For this essay, you’ll explore in depth any single genre of writing that interests you. For instance, you may analyze short stories, other fiction, poetry, songs, journalism, memoirs, essays, movie reviews, social media posts, etc. Citing specific examples, you will analyze what constitutes effective writing in that genre, and why. You might explore one or more of these things: the author’s tone or voice; use of description; diction (word choice); whether the author made a convincing argument, and why; convincing use of the rhetorical triangle: ethos, logos, and pathos. Required Content • Include 2 or 3 examples of writing from different authors writing in the same genre. • Include only one genre of writing. Don’t include both fiction and poetry, for example. • Do not use any readings that have been assigned for class. • Provide a takeaway at the end—an idea that pulls your examples together. • Papers will be graded on grammar, punctuation, and organization, as well as content. Mechanics • 3-4 double-spaced pages (750-1,000 words), not including your cover page or References page • Include a cover page with your name, English 111, and a title (not the assignment title). Do not put this information at the top of the first page. This will already be on the cover sheet. The first sentence of your paper should start at the top of the page. • 12-pt Times New Roman font • Use 1-inch margins top-to-bottom and side-to-side. No extra spaces between paragraphs. • Use 1 or 2 (no more than 2) short quotations from each of the readings to support your argument as to what makes for effective writing in that genre. • Include in-text citations and a References page in APA format. (Check Purdue OWL online for examples of APA formatting.) • Other APA items: Use a running head. (Check Purdue OWL to see how to format this.) • You may use subheadings if you like (a different subheading for each reading, for example), but this is not required. • Do not write an abstract. Helpful Hints Keep the quotations short and select them carefully. This essay should not be dominated by quotes or summarize the reading you did. I’m looking for original thought.
